Upland Meadow Mittens

These mittens are worked from cuff to fingertip, in the round, and feature a stranded colourwork pattern. They have a more rounded top than is usual, but are otherwise designed in the traditional Norwegian mitten style.
This winter accessory was inspired by the summertime hay meadows of the northern Pennines in England. The slopes are dotted with stone barns (represented by the Faroese seed pattern on the palms) and myriad blooming wildflowers.

These mittens are worked from cuff to fingertip, in the round, and feature a stranded colourwork pattern. They have a more rounded top than is usual, but are otherwise designed in the traditional Norwegian mitten style.

Materials: 2 oz [57g] of DK weight yarn in MC (main colour), 1.5 oz [43g] in CC (contrasting colour)
Yarn Details: MC – New Lanark DK, 100% Pure New Wool, 132 yds [120 m] in 50 g ball, Ecru; CC – handspun Blue Faced Leicester 3-ply, from combed top by Fluff-n-Stuff, 246 yds [225 m] in 4 oz [113 g]; s-twist; 984 ypp, 12 wpi.
Needles: US2.5 [3 mm] and US3 [3.25 mm] DPNs or circulars to suit your preferred method of knitting in the round (or size needed to match gauge).
Gauge: 7 stitches & 7 rows per 1” [2.54 cm] square in two colour pattern using larger needles, after blocking.
Finished size: adult women’s medium circumference 8” [20 cm], length 9.75” [25 cm]
Other: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, smooth waste yarn.
